Bloodstone

Tumbled Bloodstone

Also called heliotrope, bloodstone is the traditional March birthstone.

BLOODSTONE (blŭd stoʊn) mainly comes from India, but it is also found in Brazil, Australia, China, and the US. It is a type of chalcedony, which is a mix of quartz and moganite, with inclusions of red jasper or iron oxide. Its chemical composition is SiO2 + Fe2O3. It has a hardness of between 6.5 and 7 on the Mohs scale.

The original name, heliotrope (meaning ‘sun turning’), was given to it by the Greeks. They believed that the red spots on the stone were linked to the light of the sun.

In the Middle Ages, bloodstone was renamed. It was said that it was first formed when drops of Christ’s blood fell upon stones at the base of the crucifix. This also led to bloodstone sometimes being referred to as “the Martyr’s stone“.

It has been found carved into rings, seals, and pendants, and it has also long been used as an amulet against the evil eye.

Metaphysical Properties

Bloodstone helps to circulate energy throughout the body and to all the different chakras. It removes energy blockages, which can help for sparking creativity, motivation, confidence, and mental clarity. It also aids in forgiveness, healing, and letting go of negative emotions.

Many feel physically invigorated when working with bloodstone, and many wear it before or during exercise, hard labor, or other strenuous tasks.

Healers and masseuses sometimes use these stones (especially as massage wands) to help move energy to certain spots or to encourage it to flow freely.

Care and Cleansing

Cleaning bloodstone is as easy as washing it with soap and water, or wiping it with a soft cloth.

Cleansing bloodstone consists of running it under some lukewarm water and then leaving it to charge in the sun for an hour or so.

We also have it available at our brick and mortar shop.
